Las Vegas History

1973: The first World Series of Poker at Binion's Horseshoe.

In 1973, the first World Series of Poker took place at Binion's Horseshoe, marking the beginning of a legendary annual event that would shape the world of professional poker. The brainchild of Las Vegas casino owner and poker player, the World Series of Poker (WSOP) started as a series of cash games that included five-card stud, deuce to seven low-ball draw, razz, seven-card stud, and Texas hold 'em. The format for the Main Event as a freeze-out Texas hold 'em game was introduced the following year. At the time, Binion's Horseshoe was a historic venue with fewer than 50 poker tables in the entire city of Las Vegas, and it did not even have a poker room. Despite these humble beginnings, the event received TV coverage by CBS Sports in 1973, marking a significant milestone in the history of poker.

Binion's Horseshoe quickly gained a legendary reputation, and by the late 1980s, it could barely accommodate all the players coming through its doors. The casino's role in establishing the World Series of Poker solidified its place in poker history, and the event has continued to grow in popularity and prestige. Today, the World Series of Poker is a globally recognized tournament that attracts professional poker players and enthusiasts from around the world. Binion's Horseshoe's pivotal role in hosting the inaugural World Series of Poker in 1973 laid the foundation for what has become one of the most prestigious and anticipated events in the poker world.
